Wafaa M Rashed, Chair and Founder of PAPERI (Pan-African PGS Education and Research Initiative), shared a post on LinkedIn:
“From Trainees to Leaders: The PAPERI – Ensembl Workshop Officially Begins
🚀 Today marks the official start of the PAPERI – Ensembl Genome Browser Workshop 2026 – a new step in strengthening genomics and bioinformatics capacity across Africa.
This workshop is hosted by PAPERI and supported by the Ensembl Outreach Team, following the success of the first PAPERI – Ensembl Train-the-Trainer programme.
What makes this initiative especially meaningful is that the sessions are now being led by graduates of the first cohort – transforming trainees into Training Leaders and demonstrating the power of sustainable, African-led scientific capacity building.
We are proud to begin with our first session:
Session 1:
Introduction to the Ensembl Genome Browser and Retrieving Genomic Sequences
Led by Elena Lukhere (Malawi), Chulalongkorn University, Thailand.
Over the coming weeks, participants will explore:
- Ensembl Genome Browser
- Variant Annotation and VEP
- Ensembl Regulation and Epigenomics
The overwhelming response to this workshop, with all places filled within less than 24 hours, reflects the growing interest in genomics training across the continent.
My sincere thanks to Dr. Jorge Batista Da Rocha, Ensembl Outreach Project Leader, Ms. Louisse Paola Mirabueno, Ensembl Outreach Officer, for their continued support, guidance, and belief in this initiative.
And to our Training Leaders – thank you for stepping forward to lead.
Africa is not only learning science.
Africa is leading science.”
