“Amplifying African Voices in Genetics and Genomics Policy
By Ms. Mary Mwanza – A Persistent Advocate for Ethical Research and African Policy Empowerment
When African researchers ask critical questions – ‘Who will use my data? Will it leave Zambia? Who benefits? How will results be returned?’ – They are not just asking for transparency. They are standing up for equity, sovereignty, and the right of our continent to shape its own scientific future.
Ms. Mary Mwanza, a graduate of our Policy Advocacy in Genetics and Genomics course, continues to lead with courage and clarity. Her persistent writing and advocacy remind us that Africa’s voice in global research must not only be heard – it must be respected.
Through her work, Ms. Mwanza calls on policymakers, researchers, and communities to ensure that data from African people and African lands is used for Africa’s benefit first.
We celebrate her commitment and call on all African scientists, advocates, and policymakers to follow her example – to question, to engage, and to speak boldly for ethical, equitable, and impactful research across our continent.
‘Our genetics, our policies, our future – led by Africans, for Africans.’
Let’s stand together with Ms. Mwanza and every African researcher who dares to make science serve our people.”
