Wafa Samara: Addressing Misaligned Incentives in the Oncology Ecosystem

Wafa Samara, Vice President and Chief Pharmacy Officer at City of Hope, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“At the Association for Value-Based Cancer Care SoCal Regional Collaborative hosted by City of Hope, I joined a discussion on misaligned incentives in the oncology ecosystem.

For pharmacy, misalignment is not theoretical. We see it when a patient is ready to start a therapy, but the coverage pathway is complicated. We also see it when the most appropriate treatment is affected by benefit design, site of care, prior authorization, or cost-sharing.

For someone with cancer, hope means getting the right diagnosis and treatment the first time. The right treatment is only the beginning. Patients also need a system that helps them access it, understand it, tolerate it and continue it safely. That requires pharmacy to be part of the broader conversation about value.

The discussion at the summit reinforced where progress can start: Democratizing cancer care will need more transparency, better coordination, and more aligned incentives across the ecosystem to make it easier for patients to receive the right treatment at the right time and right location.

We all agreed that when it comes to our patients: We Can Do Better!”
