Wade Swenson: Putting Care Into Rural Cancer

Wade Swenson, Founder of Rural Cancer Institute and Medical Director, Medical Oncologist, and Hematologist at Lakewood Health System, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper he co-authored with Jack O. Hensold published in JCO Oncology Practice:

“Proud to share our second editorial in JCO Oncology Practice: “Putting Care Into Rural Cancer.” A massive shoutout to my co-author, Jack Hensold, MD, for his insightful contributions and expertise in advancing oncology care.

In this piece, we address the growing shortage of the oncology workforce in rural areas and highlight innovative strategies to improve access, including telehealth models from Australia, collaborative care in Montana, and the Rural Oncology Home at Lakewood Health System in Minnesota.

We’re especially excited about the Rural Cancer Institute’s CORE (Clinical Oncology Rural Experience) program launching in Minnesota in 2026, designed to expose medical students, residents, fellows, and advanced practice students to the realities and rewards of rural oncology practice. Thank you to the leaders making this program possible: Emily McGovern, DO, Aquino Williams, MD, Stephanie Ohlmann, Caroline Schroeder (Holgerson), and Joshua Pritchett, M.D.
