“Voice of the families post No. 50: Nuradis and his father.
Nuradis is a five-year-old boy from Debark district, Ethiopia. He lives with his parents and five siblings. His home is approximately 105 km from the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital (UoGCSH). His medical journey began a year ago when he first fell ill. Due to financial constraints, the family could not secure adequate treatment at a local hospital, leading to a year-long interruption in his care.
When Nuradis’s condition significantly worsened, his father brought him back to the local facility, which then referred him to UoGCSH, where he was diagnosed with blood cancer. Upon hearing the diagnosis, his father was shaken.
‘I was shocked and felt as if I was not a lucky person,’ he shared, adding that his initial reaction was to take his son home. However, after receiving counselling and being enrolled in the CANCaRe Africa cash transfer program, the family agreed to begin treatment. Nuradis is now undergoing the induction phase of his therapy.
