Lives Behind the Data: Vivek Subbiah and Amy Ware on the Human Impact of Oncology Innovation

Vivek Subbiah, Chief of Early-Phase Drug Development at the Sarah Cannon Research Institute, shared a post by Amy Ware, on LinkedIn, adding:

“Thank you for visiting our clinical trials clinic and spending time with our patients Amy Ware. Your post reminds us why this work matters so deeply.

It’s an extraordinary moment in oncology drug development and research. These novel precision medicines aren’t just advancing science- they’re giving patients the gift of time.

The story you shared is one of many that fuels our mission for all those in cancer research and cancer care. Every trial, every molecule, every milestone is anchored in the lives behind the data.

Quoting Amy Ware’s post:

“I stopped by to see my colleagues at SCRI Oncology Partners today and had the privilege of meeting a patient enrolled on one of our new drug cancer clinical trials.

This individual had previously sought care at multiple cancer centers. Despite receiving standard-of-care therapies, their disease continued to progress, and they were told they had limited options.

Upon referral to Sarah Cannon Research Institute, the patient was screened and enrolled on a clinical trial evaluating a novel therapy.

Today, their disease is well controlled, their performance status has dramatically improved, and they are regaining quality of life – even sharing:

“I had lost hope. If you had seen me before, I was so sick. I was told I was going to die. But this place gave me hope. They gave me time. Look at me now — we’re going on vacation, and I’m even slowly starting to work out again.”

This case highlights the critical role of clinical trials in providing access to novel therapies for patients with limited treatment options.

It is also a reminder of why researchers like Dr. Vivek Subbiah, Chief, Early Phase Drug Development at SCRI and our entire SCRI OP team are essential: Their commitment to translational research and clinical innovation ensures that patients with advanced cancers have opportunities for improved outcomes and extended survival.

I am so beyond inspired by their work and how deeply this team cares for every patient who walks through our doors.”
