Vilma Pacheco Barcia, Medical Oncologist and Assistant Professor at University Francisco de Vitoria, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“It’s an honor to share our recent open-access research article, which reflects the hard work and commitment of everyone involved, and represents the first two interventional studies aimed at addressing burnout among Medical Oncology residents in Spain.
Burnout is alarmingly prevalent among young medical oncologists, affecting up to 71% of physicians in Europe, with significant personal and professional consequences.
We evaluated two approaches:
– The Resilience-Sociedad Española de Oncología Médica (SEOM) program, based on communication and coping skills workshops.
– A Group Psychotherapy (GP) program implemented at Vall d’Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO), offering a structured therapeutic space over several months.
Our findings show that communication skills workshops reduced burnout by significantly enhancing personal achievement, while group psychotherapy emerged as a feasible and effective strategy with a meaningful reduction in burnout levels.
Many thanks to all the medical oncology residents who participated in this study and openly engaged in this process. Special thanks to Vall d’Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO) for their outstanding GP work.
Grateful to Dr. Elena Elez Fernández, MD PhD, an exceptional mentor throughout this professional wellbeing journey, and Dr. Luis León Mateos, coordinator of Resilience-group, for their support.
Many thanks to my co-authors for their valuable collaboration and contributions: Berta Obipor, David Páez López-Bravo, Pablo Jimenez Labaig, Urbano Anido, Alicia Quilez Cutillas, Noelia Tarazona, Domingo Antonio Sánchez Martínez, Ana Fernández Montes, Enriqueta Felip.
The RESILIENCE-SEOM study was possible thanks to a Sociedad Española de Oncología Médica (SEOM) Research Grant 2022.
And looking ahead: we are looking forward to start our next interventional study in January 2026, made possible by a Sociedad Española de Oncología Médica (SEOM) Research Grant 2025 awarded to the +MIR and Resilience-SEOM Group, thanks to my co-PI Yago Garitaonaindía.”
