Vikash Jaiswal: A Wake-Up Call for Cardio-Oncology Care in Breast Cancer Survivorship

Vikash Jaiswal, Social Media Editor at European Heart Journal Imaging Method and Practice, Associate Editor at International Journal Cardiology, Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Excited to share our new paper just published in the American Journal of Preventive Cardiology!

Using 26 years of national CDC WONDER data, we examined heart failure (HF)–related mortality among breast cancer patients across the U.S. — and the findings are a wake-up call.

Key takeaways:

  • HF-related mortality declined steadily from 1999 to 2014 (APC –5.44%) — but has been rising again since 2014 (APC +6.28%), signaling a worrying reversal.
  • Racial disparities persist: Non-Hispanic Black patients carry the highest burden (AAMR 0.176 vs. 0.140 in NH White patients).
  • Geography matters: Nonmetropolitan areas and states like Mississippi show significantly higher mortality rates — a stark reminder that zip code affects survival.
  • Age amplifies risk: Patients ≥65 years face a cumulative mortality ratio nearly 5× higher than the overall population.
  • Most HF deaths occur outside hospitals: 33% in nursing/long-term care facilities and 30% at home — underscoring the need for sustained survivorship care.

The bottom line: As breast cancer survival improves, cardiovascular complications are becoming an increasingly critical challenge. Integrating cardio-oncology care, addressing inequities, and optimizing long-term follow-up aren’t optional — they’re essential.

Grateful to work alongside an incredible team.”
