Giuseppe Banna: Vaping and Lung Cancer – Our Systematic Review Raises Serious Concerns

Giuseppe Banna, Consultant Medical Oncologist at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Vaping and Lung Cancer: Our Systematic Review Raises Serious Concerns.

Our new systematic review published in ESMO – European Society for Medical Oncology Open (2025) sends a strong warning: e-cigarette use may be associated with an increased risk of lung cancer.

Key Messages You Should Not Ignore:

– A potential link between vaping and higher lung cancer risk emerged consistently across available studies.
– Dual users (traditional cigarettes + e-cigarettes) showed the highest observed risk, suggesting additive or synergistic harm.
– The evidence challenges the widespread belief that vaping is a safe or risk-free alternative for smokers.
– Despite limited long-term data, the signal is clear enough to call for caution, stronger regulation, and more robust research.

The takeaway: Vaping is not harmless.

Our review highlights an urgent need to understand – and communicate – the long-term health consequences of e-cigarettes before more damage is done. A must-read for professionals in Public Health, Oncology, Preventive Medicine, and healthcare policy.

Thanks to Aruni Ghose and the great team.”
