Vania Wisdom: The Lancet Article on Rising Cancer Rates Among Young Adults

Vania Wisdom, Senior Executive Editor and Oncology Ambassador at The Lancet, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Cancer is largely a disease of older adults.

However a surprising increase of cancer in young adults (on their 20s,30s and 40s), have been documented worldwide. While scientists are investigating the causes of this apparent change in the epidemiology of cancer, health systems need to adapt to the specific needs of young adults with cancer. No reason for alarm at this stage, as these cases are still rare, but they raise new concerns and health care systems are not prepared to address the needs of this patients.

I find the topic of cancer in young adults fascinating from a scientific perspective, and I enjoyed the opportunity to write about the challenges that healthcare systems are facing, in this week’s issue of The Lancet
