Vanessa Kerry, CEO of Seed Global Health, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Building the health workforce of the future is the key to unlocking better health and stronger communities. I had the honor of leading an innovative training initiative with Discovery Health in South Africa and Mass General to augment essential speciality care in South Africa.
We just published the key findings of the 8 year program. In sum, transformative and replicable.
All fellows divided time b/w research and clinical observership, with programs individualized for the fellows and mentors in terms of time dedicated to each. Strengths of the program included formal educational benefits; advanced research techniques, scholarship, and educational opportunities, clinical exposure; strong mentorship, expanded networks; immersive experiences; and accelerated career paths.
Weaknesses comprised short period of 1 year study; challenges to reintegration in South Africa; tight budgets; inability to do hands-on practice in the US; and desire for formal recognition of their time of study in the program.
Fellows all noted impact of the program on careers- including increased professional opportunities and expanded networks, as well as deepened commitment to and impact in strengthening the capacity of and breadth of service in South Africa’s health system.”
