Vandana Mahajan: NSCLC vs SCLC – Key Differences Patients Should Know

Vandana Mahajan, Palliative Care Counselor, Cancer Counselor, Patient Advocate, and Cancer Survivor, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Every support group meeting there is a learning for all those who are affected by lung cancer. In the 175th support group meeting Dr. Mint Shah clearly outlined the key differences between NSCLC and SCLC. Sharing some key takeaways:

NSCLC vs SCLC

  •  NSCLC – More common, slower growing, relatively better prognosis
  •  SCLC – Less common, highly aggressive, rapid progression

Smoking Association

  •  NSCLC – May occur in non-smokers
  •  SCLC – Strongly linked to smoking

Growth and Spread

  • NSCLC – Slower growth, later metastasis
  •  SCLC – Rapid growth, early spread

Biology and Special Features

  •  NSCLC – Targetable mutations (EGFR, ALK, etc.)
  •  SCLC – not present (Paraneoplastic syndromes )

Treatment Approaches

  • NSCLC – Surgery, targeted therapy, immunotherapy
  •  SCLC – Chemotherapy + radiotherapy, with emerging role of immunotherapy

Ethnicity Matters

  • EGFR/ALK mutations are more common in Asian populations (including India)
  •  SCLC remains primarily smoking-driven and less influenced by ethnicity

Looking Ahead
With advancements – especially in immunotherapy – outcomes in SCLC are improving. Continued research and clinical trials give hope for even better survival and quality of life for patients.”
