Vandana Mahajan: 169th Lung Connect Meeting Showcases the Role of Clinical Trials

Vandana Mahajan, Palliative Care Counselor, Cancer Counselor, Patient Advocate, and Cancer Survivor, shared a post by Lung Connect on LinkedIn:

“Clinical Trials and their Relevance!

In the 169th support group meeting Dr Minit shah debunked the myths surrounding clinical trials. He explained that Clinical trials are the backbone of progress in cancer treatment.

Many fears come from misunderstandings. He clarified:

1. Participants are not ‘guinea pigs.’
Treatments are studied through carefully designed research to ensure patient safety and dignity.

2. Strict safety protocols are followed.
Trials are reviewed, approved, and monitored by ethics committees and medical experts.

3. Patients are fully informed and educated.
Clear explanations are provided about the treatment, benefits, risks, and alternatives before consent.

4. Participation is voluntary.
Patients can decline or withdraw at any time without affecting their standard care.

5. Selection is often randomized.
Randomization ensures fairness and removes bias so results are reliable.

6. Standard treatment is never withheld.
Patients receive at least the best known standard of care; trials test whether something new works better.

7. Patient rights are protected.
Confidentiality, privacy, and ethical treatment are fundamental requirements.

8. Trials offer access to new therapies.
Participants may benefit from promising treatments not yet widely available.

9. Close medical monitoring is provided.
Trial participants are often followed more frequently and carefully.

10. Risks and side effects are clearly explained.
Transparency is a core part of the informed consent process.

11. Participation helps future patients.
Clinical trials advance medical knowledge and improve treatments for others.

12. Support is available throughout the study.
Research teams guide patients, answer questions, and provide care during the trial.

Such sessions educate and empower all those who are dealing with a cancer diagnosis and help them to take informed decisions. Thinks Dr Minit Shah for your support.”
