Urvashi Prasad, Editor in Chief of the Global South Healthcare Journal and Visiting Senior Fellow at IMPRI Impact and Policy Research Institute, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Lung Cancer Kills More Men and Women Than Breast, Cervical, Prostate and Pancreatic Cancer COMBINED
Participated in the Indian Cancer Society-FICCI Roundtable that brought together clinicians, insurers, patient advocates and policymakers to rethink how India can deliver next-generation cancer care.
In my remarks, I highlighted:
- The growing impact of environmental pollution on lung cancer, especially among non-smokers.
- The importance of the Lung Cancer Awareness Month to break myths and drive early detection.
- The need for coverage of targeted therapies under Ayushman Bharat, ensuring affordability and access.
Encouragingly, the National Health Authority representative shared that immunotherapy is being considered for inclusion — which will be an important step forward no doubt.
But cancer is not just a health system issue – it is a societal challenge. Its reach is expanding, and it will touch every household in some way. The time to act is now: through prevention, awareness, equitable financing and stronger environmental regulation.
Let’s ensure that next-gen cancer care in India is not only about advanced treatments, but also about equity, sustainability and compassion.
We cannot afford to wait — cancer care must become everyone’s priority, because it is coming to virtually every household sooner or later.”
