Uri Amit: Ten-Year Outcomes of Single-Session APBI Using Permanent Palladium-103 Breast Seed Implantation

Uri Amit, Advanced Fellow in Gynecologic and GU Brachytherapy, Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre, University of Calgary, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Ten years, 27 patients, no recurrences: happy to share our long-term outcomes of single-session APBI with permanent breast seed implantation using palladium-103, now out in Brachytherapy.

In this prospective trial, we treated 27 patients with early-stage breast cancer at the University of Calgary, using a modified protocol adapted from the Sunnybrook approach.

At a median follow-up of 10 years:

  • No local or distant recurrences, and no breast cancer deaths
  • No grade 3 or higher toxicity
  • Excellent or good cosmesis in at least 90% of evaluable patients through 5 years

It’s a small, single-institution trial, so the usual caveats apply. Still, it’s encouraging long-term data for single-session APBI in carefully selected patients with favourable early-stage disease.

Thanks to my co-authors Siraj Husain, Tyler Meyer, Michael Roumeliotis, Karen Long, and to the patients who took part.”
