The 100th Anniversary of Prof. Umberto Veronesi – CancerWorld

CancerWorld shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Today marks the 100th anniversary of Prof. Umberto Veronesi, a visionary who reshaped modern oncology and whose legacy continues to guide generations of cancer specialists across Europe and beyond.

CancerWorld’s November issue’s cover story celebrates one of his most enduring contributions: the creation of the European School of Oncology (ESO). Born from Veronesi’s conviction that Europe needed its own strong, collaborative infrastructure for cancer research and training, ESO was founded in 1982 with the support of extraordinary pioneers across the continent.

Veronesi understood early on that scientific progress depends not only on innovation in the lab or the clinic, but on education, on the transfer of knowledge ‘from one brain to another,’ as he liked to say. His insistence on residential learning, multidisciplinary collaboration, gender equality, and the human dimension of medicine shaped ESO into what it is today:

an independent, international, and truly European institution dedicated to ‘learning to care,’

More than 15,000 alumni have passed through ESO’s programmes, many now leading oncology departments and institutes worldwide. And as the School approaches its 50th anniversary, its mission is as vital as ever.

Today, we honour Umberto Veronesi, innovator, surgeon, educator, humanitarian, and celebrate the living legacy he built for Europe’s oncology community.

Buon compleanno, Professor! Your vision lives on.
