Ulrika Årehed Kågström, President of Union for International Cancer Control and Board Member of Nordic Cancer Union, shared on LinkedIn:
“After eight incredibly rewarding years on the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) Board, including the past two as President, my term is coming to an end. At the upcoming General Assembly, I will hand over the presidency to Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, marking the end of an important chapter for me, both professionally and personally.
Looking back, what makes me most proud is the strategic shift we have worked to achieve together, moving from a focus on activities to a stronger focus on impact and the difference we make in cancer control worldwide.
The World Cancer Declaration and UICC’s strategy have been central to this transformation. Together, they have helped us sharpen our ambitions, clarify our priorities and strengthen our ability to turn global commitments into meaningful action and lasting impact for people affected by cancer.
Leading through change is never a solo effort. It takes courage, trust, shared purpose and a willingness to challenge the way things have always been done. I’m deeply grateful to everyone who has helped shape this journey and turn our shared vision into progress.
But beyond the strategic achievements, it’s the people I will carry with me. The inspiring conversations, the friendships, the challenges we’ve overcome and the determination to make a difference. It has been a true privilege to work alongside so many passionate and dedicated people.
As I close this chapter, I do so with pride in how far we’ve come, confidence in the direction we’ve set and hope for what lies ahead.
In my latest blog post, I reflect on this strategic journey and what comes next.
To everyone who has been part of these eight remarkable years: thank you. The journey continues, and so does our shared mission.
