Ulrika Årehed Kågström: The Hidden Financial Burden of Cancer Beyond Treatment

Ulrika Årehed Kågström, President of Union for International Cancer Control and  Board Member of Nordic Cancer Union, shared on LinkedIn:

“I’m too sick to work but too healthy to be on sick leave.’

This is how a woman who contacted Cancerfonden’s Cancer Line described her situation. A sentence that says a lot about the reality many cancer sufferers find themselves in.

The fact that more and more people are surviving cancer is a fantastic development. But surviving is not always the same as being healthy. In the midst of treatment, recovery and anxiety about the future, finances can also become a heavy burden. Two people with the same cancer diagnosis can have completely different paths back to working life, for some people their ability to work gradually returns and for others it goes up and down. And in the midst of this, many people encounter a health insurance system that does not always have room for this complexity.

In our new report ‘The budget in the shadow of cancer’, we highlight what the private financial consequences of cancer can look like.

Sweden has invested heavily in research and cancer care to help more people survive their disease, and it has paid off. The next step must be to ensure that society’s support develops at the same pace.

Please read our report.”
