Ulrika Årehed Kågström: Accelerating Research and Prevention at Almedalen

Ulrika Årehed Kågström, President of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), Secretary General/Generalsekreterare at Cancerfonden, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“What a week in Almedalen. What an impact on our questions!

It is fantastic to see how issues that we at the Swedish Cancer Society have been pursuing for a long time are now reappearing in many seminars and how our conclusions and proposals are gaining an increasingly wider audience.

For example, I am thinking about how we can shorten the time before research progress is shared by patients, an issue that was raised in several conversations during the week. Likewise, the need for more and stronger societal measures to improve lifestyle habits and prevent obesity and thus more cancer cases.

I have also had the privilege of meeting many inspiring and knowledgeable people from civil society, public service, business, research and politics. Some of them I would like to thank in particular:

  • Cilla Benkö. Thank you for an inspiring conversation about the importance of protecting democracy, free media and free research.
  • Marika Nestor. Thank you for so clearly showing the power that exists when research leads to innovation and patient benefit.
  • Sophia Godau. Thank you for an engaged conversation about nursing research and the important role of nurses in translating research into better care.
  • Lotta Edholm. Thank you for a constructive conversation about how we can strengthen the conditions for research and get more clinical studies in place.
  • Lena Hallengren. Thank you for your wise input during our seminar on the role of research in the future of cancer care.

Thanks also to SweCan, who together with their partners arranged Cancer Mission Day. There we had the opportunity to talk both about the work to eradicate cervical cancer and about how the security policy situation places higher demands on preparedness to secure cancer care and research.

Of course, I would also like to thank Cancerfonden s main partners Skandia, Apotek Hjärtat and ICA Gruppen. Your commitment and support are invaluable for the work of the Swedish Cancer Society and for everyone affected by cancer.

Soon a long-awaited vacation awaits. But first, I’m looking forward to perhaps the most important meeting place of the autumn.

In October, the Swedish Cancer Society is arranging Momentum 2026, a new European high-level conference where leading researchers, decision-makers, healthcare actors, patient representatives and the business community will gather to find concrete solutions that will enable research progress to benefit patients more quickly. It is a challenge that no country can solve on its own. That is why we need to rally Europe around the solutions, for the sake of patients and to strengthen Europe’s competitiveness in research and innovation.
I hope to see you there, if not sooner.
