Ulrika Årehed Kågström, President of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and Secretary General of Cancerfonden, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Can a simple blood test show if cancer is on its way back? Yes! Thanks to new research, this is possible, and it means that recurrence of cancer can be detected several months before a tumor is visible on X-rays, or a patient experiences symptoms.
Now we are facing the next big step – to make this method available to all cancer patients in Sweden. Therefore, Cancerfonden, together with Karolinska University Hospital, is launching the first project of its kind in the country. The goal is clear: to implement this method in healthcare in a safe, quality-assured and gentle way, as quickly as possible.
But this is about more than a single blood test. It is about ensuring that groundbreaking research reaches patients faster. Sweden is strong in cancer research, but we need to be better at translating new discoveries into practical care. For those who live with the uncertainty after cancer treatment, time is of the essence. Therefore, we must do everything we can to ensure that research advances become a natural part of everyday clinical practice more quickly. That is exactly what this project aims to do.”
