Uganda Cancer Society shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Today, Uganda Cancer Society joined the palliative care community at the commemoration organized by Hospice Africa Uganda (HAU) to honor and celebrate the life and enduring legacy of Dr. Anne Merriman on the first anniversary of her passing.
As shared through reflections from the different speakers, Dr. Merriman was a firm believer in Ubuntu; ‘I am because we are‘, a philosophy that shaped her commitment to humanity and compassionate care.
A recurring message throughout the commemoration was that the patient is the VVIP and the most important part of our work, a principle that continues to guide patient-centered care.
Speakers also reflected on Dr. Merriman’s transformative contribution as the pioneer who established Palliative Care in Uganda, emphasizing her role in advancing compassionate care and reminding us that healthcare extends beyond treatment to preserving dignity and comfort.
Her introduction of the production and use of oral morphine in Uganda revolutionized pain management, bringing relief and hope to thousands of individuals living with life-limiting illnesses.
As we remember Dr. Merriman, we celebrate a legacy that continues to inspire compassion, dignity, and humanity in care.
‘We may not be able to add days to life, but we can add life to days.'”
