“Recently I had the pleasure of joining Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell AFSM, Fire and Rescue NSW, and Children’s Guardian Rachel Ward, NSW Office of the Children’s Guardian for a conversation on leading through uncertainty, complexity and constant pressure at the Women Unlimited Leadership Summit by The Hatchery (Hub).
What struck me was how much our sectors have in common. Whether you’re caring for patients, responding to emergencies or protecting children, leadership is ultimately about people. Supporting teams through change. Making decisions when there is no perfect answer. Creating enough clarity for people to keep moving forward, even when the path ahead is uncertain.
A highlight was hearing Dame Jacinda Ardern speak. What stayed with me was her honesty. Leadership doesn’t require us to have all the answers, nor does it require us to become someone else. It asks us to lead in a way that is authentic, grounded in our values and conscious of the responsibility we carry. In a world that often rewards certainty and confidence, there was something refreshing about the reminder that curiosity, humility and humanity are powerful leadership strengths, arguably needed more than ever before.
People can live with uncertainty. What they struggle with is confusion. Our job as leaders is not to predict the future.
It’s to help others navigate it.”
