Tracey O’Brien is Named NSW Premier’s Woman of Excellence

Tracey O’Brien, Chief Cancer Officer and CEO of Cancer Institute NSW, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Some moments remind you how many people walk the journey with you.

I was honoured to be recognised as the NSW Premier’s Woman of Excellence at the NSW Women of the Year Awards, the premier event of NSW Women’s Week leading into International Women’s Day.

My sincere thanks to Minister Jodie Harrison for hosting such a wonderful event celebrating the achievements and contributions of women across NSW.

Moments like this are also a reminder that no one does this work alone. Medicine, public health and leadership are team sports, and everything I’ve had the privilege to do has been alongside extraordinary clinicians, researchers, colleagues, patients, policy makers and communities working together to reduce the impact of cancer.

Over time, my work has moved from the bedside, to leading teams and cancer centres to shaping how the whole NSW system supports people with cancer. What I’ve learnt is that leadership is another way of caring. It’s about building the conditions for great care: supporting clinicians and researchers, strengthening pathways, accelerating innovation and listening and learning from lived experience and culture and ensuring all people and communities across NSW benefit.

And behind every career in healthcare is a family that quietly walks the journey with you. Grateful to share this moment with two of my greatest supporters – my boys – who remind me every day why improving health for future generations matters so much.

Celebrating the extraordinary women across NSW recognised this week. Special shout out to Prof Nicole Turner, NSW Aboriginal Women of the Year, a joy to work with!”
