Toufic Kachaamy: What Does It Take to Turn Innovation Into Better Cancer Care?

Toufic Kachaamy, Leader of Endoscopic Oncology at Mayo Clinic Florida, shared on LinkedIn:

“What does it take to turn innovation into better cancer care?

Thank you to Dr. Vivek Kaul for an outstanding wrap-up of Advances and Innovations in Endoscopic Oncology and Multidisciplinary Gastrointestinal Cancer Care connecting the science, the debates and the work ahead.

Several messages stood out:

  • Start with the patient. Survival, function, quality of life and individual priorities must shape the questions we ask.
  • Build organ preservation around careful selection, rigorous response assessment, structured surveillance and access to salvage treatment.
  • Understand tumor biology early enough to inform treatment decisions.
  • Keep human judgment central to AI adoption. Verify outputs, protect clinical skills and own the decision.
  • Design trials with endpoints that matter to patients and can guide clinical adoption.
  • Bring the evidence back to the multidisciplinary team, where it must serve an individual patient.

For our field, technical success is one milestone. We also need to demonstrate meaningful benefit and build the systems that deliver it reliably.

Grateful to Vivek, our faculty, patient advocates, fellows, attendees and industry partners for helping move these conversations forward.

Building endoscopic oncology takes all hands on deck.”
