Toufic Kachaamy: Work Shapes Our Health More Than We Realize
Toufic Kachaamy, Chief of Medicine and Director of Gastroenterology at City of Hope, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Work Shapes Our Health More Than We Realize
We spend one third of our lives at work. Tthe conditions under which we work: long hours, stress, job insecurity, or even remote work deeply affect our physical health, mental wellbeing, and even longevity.
Many studies shows how work conditions contribute to deaths worldwide due to heart disease, diabetes and strokes. Job strain, insecurity, and burnout further shorten not just lifespan, but also the years we live in good health, healthspan.
While this isn’t just an individual concern but t’s a public health challenge, we each have to care about our health and wellness and do our best to make work, work for us. As leaders it is our responsibility to make work, work for our staff.
Over the next few posts, I’ll share how specific job conditions: like healthcare work, long hours, and remote work, impact our health, and what we can do about it. I will discuss specific challenges such as how stress can impact us and even how stress can be energizing instead of deadly when the right conditions are established.
Question for you: When you think about your job, do you feel it supports or challenges your health?”
