Torsten Haferlach, Founder and Managing Director at MLL Munich Leukemia Laboratory, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Modern hematology is virtually inconceivable without international cooperation. This is true in times of stability and even more so in times of war, destroyed infrastructure, and strained healthcare systems.
At the EHA Congress 2026 in Stockholm, I will speak about building diagnostic capacity in Ukraine and the role of international laboratory partnerships. In my view, this project demonstrates very concretely what science diplomacy can mean in healthcare: not abstract policy, but practical cooperation, knowledge transfer, capacity building, and responsibility for patient care across borders.
Especially at a time when academic freedom, international mobility, research funding, and global cooperation are coming under increasing political pressure, we should not view such partnerships as exceptions – but as a prerequisite for modern medicine. More on this in my article.”
