Todd Waldman, Professor of Oncology, Molecular Biology, and Genetics at Georgetown University School of Medicine, shared on LinkedIn:
“I wanted to share some good news. Dr. Richard Schlegel – our recently retired Professor of Pathology – has transferred his $7.5 million research endowment to the Georgetown MD/PhD program.
Dr. Schlegel’s legacy is monumental. As co-inventor of the technology behind the life-saving HPV vaccine (Gardasil), his work has prevented millions of cancer cases worldwide. For years, an endowment funded by royalties from this historic breakthrough supported his research center at Georgetown.
Before retiring, Dr. Schlegel decided to pivot these resources to the MD/PhD program. Therefore, the $7.5 million endowment has been formally transitioned to benefit the MD/PhD program, and the interest it generates now helps defray the program’s existing yearly costs.
There is no greater tribute to a lifetime of scientific breakthroughs than investing directly in the next generation of medical scientists. MD/PhD trainees sit at the intersection of clinical care and discovery, and this endowment secures the future of that vital mission.”
