Association of European Cancer Leagues shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Yesterday, we had the opportunity to meet with Wopke Hoekstra, European Commissioner in charge of taxation, and Olivér Várhelyi, European Health Commissioner, to share our views on the Tobacco Tax Directive revision.
Tobacco remains the leading cause of preventable cancer, responsible for over a quarter of all cancer deaths worldwide. Despite progress in tobacco control over recent decades, the tobacco industry continues to oppose and obstruct effective public health policies at the EU level.
At the same time, vaping is getting increasingly popular among children and teenagers. Research warns that these e-cigarettes may act as a gateway to smoking while causing serious harm to health, raising new concerns for future generations.
Protecting the most vulnerable – children, teenagers and young people – must be at the core of Europe’s tobacco tax legislation.
Tobacco taxes are one of the most effective ways to reduce smoking. We therefore applaud the European Commission’s ambitious proposal for the Tobacco Tax Directive and call on national policymakers to resist industry pressure.”
