Thor Halfdanarson: Correlation Between Serum 5-HIAA and 24-Hour Urine 5-HIAA in Carcinoid Syndrome

Thor Halfdanarson, Professor of Oncology at Mayo Clinic School of Medicine, shared a post on X about a recent article by Makarious Kerolles et al. published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism:

“No need to “lug the jug” anymore…

One of my favorite sayings of the late Dr. Eugene Woltering, one of the most passionate NET colleague I ever met.

This excellent study by Hans Hofland shows an excellent correlation between serum 5-HIAA and 24-urine 5-HIAA in patients with carcinoid syndrome.

We made this change at Mayo Clinic several years ago and having a reliable 5-HIAA blood test with fast turnaround time makes a big difference.

For colleagues in the U.S., Mayo Laboratories offer a validated plasma 5-HIAA assay along with a whole host of other useful tests.
