The Max Foundation Shares Rupali’s GIST Journey on GIST Awareness Day

The Max Foundation shared a post on LinkedIn:

“On GIST Awareness Day, we’re honored to share Rupali’s story from India. Her journey has been successful thanks to key partnerships with Novartis Global Health and Friends of Max.

She was 22.
Her son was only eight months old.
And her life changed in an instant.

Rupali was diagnosed with gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) shortly after giving birth. What followed was a long and uncertain path filled with hospital visits, delayed scans, surgery, financial strain, and time away from her young child.

But it was also a journey of courage and community.

Rupali felt supported, receiving medicine before and after surgery through our partnership with Novartis and attending patient support groups hosted by Friends of Max.

At first, Rupali barely spoke during patient meetings. She listened quietly, taking everything in. Over time, connections led to confidence.

Today, Rupali is one of the most engaged voices in her community. She shares openly, supports others, and reminds new patients that they are not alone. And her son receives support for his schooling through the Friends of Max scholarship program.

Since 2021, Rupali’s physician has reduced her checkups to annual visits.

Rupali shares:

‘No matter how serious the illness, with the right treatment, the support of loved ones, and faith in ourselves, it is possible to overcome it.’

Stories like Rupali’s are why partnerships matter. They help turn fear into hope and isolation into connection.
