Terisa Tamang: Creating Safe Spaces for Children and Families Affected by Cancer

Terisa Tamang, Founder, President and Counselor of Dhairya Cancer Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“With prior consent taken from the family, this photo captures a quiet but meaningful moment from our art session. On the left is me, and on the right is a brave mother, Puspa BK.

In our context, where services are often limited, resources are stretched, and physical cancer treatment naturally takes priority over mental health, such moments become deeply significant.

She came to me and shared her reflection about her 12-year-old daughter, who has completed chemotherapy for cancer and is currently in the recovery phase:

‘My daughter uses her mobile a lot, and I feel she tends to overthink. Her treatment is over now, but she still needs something positive to engage her. Will this program be conducted again? I would really like her to continue learning. I want her to explore her creativity. This activity really helped her.’

At Dhairya Cancer Foundation, we often work within the reality of limited funding and a shortage of mental health practitioners in Nepal. Yet, we continue to witness how powerful even small creative spaces can be, how they allow children and families affected by cancer to express, breathe, and feel seen beyond illness. We remain committed, step by step, to creating such safe spaces for children and families affected by cancer, where healing is not only physical, but also emotional and deeply human.”
