The Max Foundation shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Meet Tenaye Alazar, our Program Coordinator in Ethiopia since 2016.
Swipe to learn more about her and the role she plays on our team.
Describe a typical work week:
Throughout the week, my role involves managing multiple facets of the healthcare process, including coordinating with patients, physicians, pharmacists, and laboratory technicians.
Key tasks during the week include:
- Registering new patients into the system
- Processing reapprovals for ongoing treatments
- Managing the inventory to ensure adequate stock levels of necessary medications
- Organizing and maintaining accurate data records
- Following up with patients to ensure adherence to treatment plans and address any emerging concerns
- Managing the Last Mile program, which involves overseeing the final stages of medication delivery and support to patients in remote or underserved areas
What do you enjoy most about working at The Max Foundation?
I truly appreciate how we collaborate across countries, exchanging a wide range of experiences and knowledge. This global interaction is genuinely inspiring and adds significant value to the growth of our careers.
What is a special memory you have with patients?
One special memory I have with a patient is about a nine-year-old girl who started treatment at a very early age. I used to follow up with her regularly. Several years later, during my site visit, I saw that girl all grown up and she’s now a college student.
What have you learned since working at The Max Foundation that you didn’t know previously?
I used to believe that simply providing medication was a highly impactful act. However, I have come to understand that this alone is not sufficient. Our patients are often affected by the political and economic crises in the country, which significantly impact their quality of life. For our patients to achieve good health and a balanced life, comprehensive support is essential.
What languages do you speak?
Amharic, Oromifa, and English
What do you love most about where you live?
I love my country, Ethiopia – I cherish where I live, the beautiful landscapes, the fresh air, and the rich culture.
What is your favorite holiday and how do you celebrate it?
The Ethiopian New Year because the land is beautifully covered with the yellow endemic flower known as Adey, which symbolizes hope and new beginnings for me.
If you were an animal, which one would you be and why?
I would be a lioness because she protects and nurtures her pride. She also ages with grace and strength.”
