Some people earn your respect by refusing to let go of a hard problem.
Andrew Ewald is one of those people.
For years, Andrew and his team at Johns Hopkins Medicine have been doing the kind of research that does not come with quick applause, but matters deeply all the same:
Understanding how breast cancer spreads through the body and what it might take to stop metastasis before it takes hold.
I have a real appreciation for people like that.
People who stay with the hard questions.
People who do not need easy headlines.
People who keep pushing because the work itself matters.
The research JKTG supported with Andrew’s team looked at how reactive oxygen signaling changes inside breast cancer cells as they spread.
That work helped show that metastasis could be disrupted by targeting specific control machinery in those cells.
It also helped lead to major NCI grants and important publications.
That is meaningful progress.
More than that, it is the result of years of serious thought, discipline, and commitment from people who care enough to keep going.
I am grateful for Andrew, his team, and the work they continue to do.
Progress in science depends on people willing to stay with hard questions long enough to answer them.
