Tamer Refaat: Multidisciplinary Perspectives on T2N0 Rectal Cancer Management at ASCO GI 2026

Tamer Refaat, Associate Director of Global Oncology at Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Canter – Loyola University Chicago, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“It was a true pleasure to participate in the T2N0 rectal cancer Tumor Board session at ASCO GI 2026 in San Francisco.

This session brought together an outstanding multidisciplinary panel to tackle some of the most challenging real-world scenarios in early-stage rectal cancer – where high-level evidence remains limited and standards of care can vary significantly across institutions.

What made the discussion particularly rewarding was the thoughtful exchange around risk stratification, treatment sequencing, and the evolving role of radiation therapy, all with a shared goal: improving outcomes while preserving organ function whenever safely possible.

The encouraging news is that outcomes continue to improve, and our patients are increasingly benefiting from organ-preservation strategies driven by multidisciplinary decision-making and individualized care.

Grateful to my fellow panelists and the engaged audience for an excellent and stimulating discussion at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium.”
