Susanna Fletcher Greer: New Research Aiming to Restore the Immune Response in Melanoma

Susanna Fletcher Greer, Chief Scientific Officer at the V Foundation, shared on LinkedIn:

“I often say that I write these research summaries to share the incredible progress being made against cancer. But that’s not really true, I think write them for myself.

Cancer is hard. This week alone, two of my friends received cancer diagnoses. Even after spending my entire career in cancer research, news like that never gets easier.

But then I sit down to read about discoveries like this one from Dr. Rina Plattner and her team, and I’m reminded of why we do this work. Of the extraordinary scientists who refuse to give up.

Of the progress being made every single day, even when it doesn’t feel like we’re moving fast enough.

Writing these newsletters reminds me that there is much reason for hope. And some weeks, I need that reminder more than others. I’m so grateful for the scientists who keep pushing forward. Their work matters more than they may ever know.

What if we could keep cancer treatments working longer?

One of the biggest challenges in cancer care is treatment resistance. A therapy works, sometimes remarkably well, until the cancer finds a way around it.

New V Foundation-funded research from Dr. Rina Plattner and her team at the University of Kentucky offers an exciting possibility: using an existing leukemia drug to help overcome treatment resistance in melanoma and restore the immune response.

The potential is powerful: more treatment options and more time for patients.

I’m proud to support scientists pursuing discoveries like this.”
