Susanna Fletcher Greer, Chief Scientific Officer at The V Foundation, shared on LinkedIn:
“There’s a particular kind of frustration I see and sense all the time in scientists.
It’s not that they can’t explain their work.
It’s that they can’t quite get someone else to feel why it matters.
They care deeply about the question they’re chasing, the experiments they’re running, the years, decades even, they’re willing to spend following an idea. A hunch. A drive to understand the ‘why?’
But translating that inner certainty into something other people can connect with? That’s the hard part.
And honestly, it’s one of my favorite parts of my work.
Helping scientists communicate not just what they’re doing, but why they can’t imagine not doing it.
Because underneath the methods and the data, there’s always something very human.
Curiosity. Hope. Frustration. Persistence. The willingness to keep going when the answer still isn’t clear.
Science also has a complicated relationship with failure. An experiment that doesn’t work isn’t just a dead end, it’s often a signal. A small shift in direction. A clue that changes the next question you ask.
And when scientists can bring audiences into that way of thinking, something powerful happens.
You don’t need to understand every detail to understand why the work matters. You just need to understand the motivations of the person asking.
I think that’s true far beyond science.
We all want the people around us to understand what drives us. And there’s something incredibly meaningful about being able to put words to that, about helping someone else see the value in something you care deeply about.
It’s a privilege to help scientists find those words.
And if you’re doing work that feels important but hard to explain, I’d love to help you shape it.
If you’re interested, send me a message about what you’re working on and why it matters to you. I’ll help you turn it into something others can actually feel.
Because often, the value is already there.
It just needs the right way to be seen.”
