“Can precision oncology truly move beyond the walls of academic cancer centres?
This was the central question we explored when I had the privilege of Moderating a panel on ‘Precision Oncology in Community Practice: Building Sustainable Models of Care’ at Day 1 of the Community Oncology Global Congress 2026.
I was delighted to be joined by two distinguished experts:
- Dr. Atalal AbuSanad, Medical Oncologist, King Abdulaziz University, Saudi Arabia
- Dr. G.C. Soham Banerjee, Senior Genetic Counselor, West Bengal, India
Precision oncology promises something transformative – the right treatment for the right patient, guided by the biology of their tumour.
But how do we make that promise accessible to patients outside major academic centres?
Our discussion focused on the realities of implementation: infrastructure, expertise, training, costs, Molecular Tumour Boards, clinical workflows and – most importantly – equity of access.
One thought voiced out by the Panellists:
We need to build precision oncology programmes around clinical decisions, not around tests.
There may not be one model that works globally. Our healthcare systems, resources and challenges are vastly different. But through collaboration, connectivity, shared expertise and structured pathways, we can build sustainable models that bring precision cancer care closer to patients.
The future is not about creating isolated centres of excellence.It is about creating connected ecosystems of excellence.
And ultimately, a patient’s geography should not determine their access to precision cancer care.
