“My Lifelong Mission Indeed.
I am honored to share my recent interview with EBO where I reflect on the journey that has shaped my work as an oncologist, quality leader, educator, and advocate for equitable cancer care.
Throughout my career, I have focused on one overarching mission: closing the oncology equity gap.
Whether through improving access to precision medicine, expanding biomarker and genomic testing, advocating for policy reform, educating community oncologists, or strengthening the rural physician workforce, my goal has always been to ensure that every patient-regardless of where they live-has access to the highest standard of cancer care.
In the interview, I discuss:
- Why rural cancer disparities remain one of the greatest challenges in oncology.
- How precision medicine and biomarker testing can transform patient outcomes- but only if every eligible patient has access.
- My work leading quality initiatives at Texas Oncology to improve the implementation of precision medicine across community practice.

Looking ahead, my vision is clear: every patient diagnosed with cancer should receive comprehensive CGP and germline testing as part of routine cancer care. Precision medicine has already transformed oncology, but its promise will only be realized when innovation reaches every patient-not just those treated at major academic centers.
After more than two decades, I remain convinced that the greatest breakthroughs in oncology will not be measured solely by new therapies or technologies, but by our ability to deliver those advances equitably to every patient.
I am grateful to the many patients, colleagues, mentors, and collaborators who have shared this journey with me. The work continues, and I am more optimistic than ever about what we can accomplish together.
