Steven Kahn: Resignation of VP Chris Kohler Highlights Deepening Ethical Concerns at the American Diabetes Association

Steven Kahn, Professor of Medicine at University of Washington, shared on LinkedIn:

“In the aftermath of the events at Scientific Sessions in New Orleans in June, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) continues to go from one mistake to the next.

Now they plan to appoint an interim editorial team to restore the activities of its flagship journal Diabetes Care. They to do so against the advice of Christian Kohler, their own Vice President for Publications, who has nearly 30 years of experience in medical publishing.

Forging ahead to add another faux pas to how they have handled events since June has left Chris Kohler with no option but to resign.

Read his attached resignation letter, as well as a great piece by Kate Travis of Retraction Watch. ADA has gone from a place of ensuring ethical scientific publishing that made them the recipient of Retraction Watch’s inaugural Doing the Right Thing Award to a place of desperation where they will do things considered unethical in the publishing world. Kudos to Chris Kohler and continued concern for the actions of ADA’s leadership.”
