Stergios Boussios, Head of Department of Medical Oncology at University Hospital of Ioannina, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Over the past 15 months, I have come to realise that life is both simple and unpredictable, full of challenges and surprises.
During the last 8 years, I devoted myself to turning a dream into reality. Along this journey, I faced difficulties, setbacks, disappointment, and even unfairness. Yet, I chose not to give up, but to continue moving forward toward my own Ithaca, like Odysseus in Homer’s epic.
This perseverance has led to two milestones I am deeply proud of:
In June 2024, I was elected Associate Professor at the University of Ioannina and Head of the Department of Medical Oncology at University Hospital of Ioannina — at my birthplace.
In September 2025, I was included in Stanford University and Elsevier’s World’s Top 2% Scientists list of 2025, recognising my contributions over the past year.
Please allow me to share my gratitude and reflections with:
- My UK patients – You have been my greatest motivation. In my clinics, I often said that we share a common goal: to keep dreaming and striving for victory.
- My UK colleagues and mentors – Thank you for giving me opportunities that helped me overcome my limitations.
- My UK junior doctors and medical students – Your appreciation, recognition, and positive energy enriched me both academically and personally.
- My Greek patients – I have returned home to fight alongside you. I promise that, together, we will make the difference you all deserve.
- My Greek colleagues at the Department of Medical Oncology, University Hospital of Ioannina – Change often feels unnatural, yet it is the very force that drives progress. I trust that our collective efforts will succeed, for we owe this responsibility to our society.
I wish to express my specific gratitude to Medway NHS Foundation Trust, Medway NHSFT Research and Innovation Team, Medway NHS Foundation Trust Knowledge and Library Service, Medical Education, KMMS Medical School, University of Kent, Canterbury Christ Church University, King’s College London which offered me the environment, opportunities, and trust to grow both as a clinician and as an academic.
It is a profound honour to be recognised alongside Professor Ranjit Akolekar, with both of us representing Medway NHS Foundation Trust as affiliated members included in Stanford University’s World’s Top 2% Scientists list.”
