Stephanie Weiner: U.S. Medical School Enrollment Surpasses 100,000 for the First Time

Stephanie Weiner, Director of Communications Portfolio Management at Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Big milestone for academic medicine: For the first time, total enrollment in U.S. MD-granting medical schools has surpassed 100,000 students.

Even more notable: medical school applicants increased 5.3%, reversing a three-year decline and marking the largest gain (outside of the COVID surge) in a decade.

A few other data points that stood out to me:

  • Women continue to make up the majority of applicants, matriculants, and overall enrollment
  • First-year enrollment is up again, with students ranging in age from 18 to 60
  • The entering class brought a remarkable commitment to service (16.8 million community service hours before matriculation!)

As conversations about the future of the physician workforce, access to care, and medical education continue, this data is both encouraging and grounding. It’s a reminder of the sustained interest in medicine and the responsibility academic medicine carries to support, train, and retain the next generation of physicians.”
