Stacey Tinianov, Founder and Executive Director at Advocates for Collaborative Education, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Thank you to The Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) for supporting our session ‘Advocacy Around the World‘ at this year’s annual meeting. It was an honor to chair the session and we had a fabulous turnout for presentations on perspectives, challenges, and successes in cancer patient advocacy from Australia, Southeast Asia, and the United States, followed by an animated Q/A and rich discussion on uniting global advocacy to expand our collective efforts.
Special thank you to Daniel Johnstone and Maria Jocelyn Kara Magsanoc-Alikpala for generously sharing your perspectives. And we missed you Ginny Mason and Renate Haidinger.
Prior to the session Fiona White and Alan White pointed out that three years ago there were only a handful of advocates at the MASCC meeting in Nara, Japan and this year, there are nearly 50. We have much work to do to fully integrate patient and advocate voices into research and clinical practice methodologies but today was certainly a moment to acknowledge very real progress.
It was also a moment to publicly acknowledge and thank Maryam Lustberg who took a chance and welcomed Kelly Shanahan and me to MASCC19 (and put a microphone in our hands!) and then continued to advocate for not only our inclusion but a path to meaningful membership in The Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC).
Excited to welcome many new voices into Advocates for Collaborative Education and eager to collaborate with so many new colleagues.”
