Stacey Tinianov, Founder and Executive Director at Advocates for Collaborative Education, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Thirteen years ago, on June 17th, I was post-op following a single mastectomy for breast cancer and trying to get my head and heart around what it meant to be an AYA cancer patient raising two children, and how to personalize my treatment in a system that was designed to kill the cancer rather than treat the whole person.
The combination of my diagnosis, my mother’s diagnosis four months prior, and the de novo metastatic NSCLC diagnosis of a dear friend of mine, was the catalyst for a career shift away from Cisco and the determination to change the narrative in cancer awareness, screening, treatment, supportive care, and survivorship.
As usual, I spent the couple of weeks prior to my cancerversary in a distracted, weird space between gratitude and grief that many people with a history or diagnosis of cancer can understand. I was not at the ‘top of my game’ in conversations; I was distracted by what was and what might one day be.
And then I spent that cancerversary day at an offsite in Zermatt, Switzerland discussing innovations in cancer diagnosis and treatment personalization.
In the evening, I stood staring at the Matterhorn from the edge of Riffelsee, contemplating what it means to me to not just survive but to advocate for person-centered innovation, care, and support.
This evening I will head ‘down under’ to Melbourne, Australia to chair a session on Advocacy Around the World at MASCC 2026, the annual meeting of The Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC).
To me it is profound that I am literally going ‘around the world’ with advocacy.
Grateful to be here. Grateful to be not only alive but to be really living. And grateful for the friends and allies I’ve met along the way.
