Sophie Merrick: Patient Perspectives on Immunotherapy Optimisation Trials

Sophie Merrick, Cancer Research UK Clinical Research Fellow at MRC Clinical Trials Unit at UCL, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“I spoke last week at the Anticancer Fund about patient perspectives of optimisation (or “de-escalation”) trials in oncology.

Optimisation trials aim to reduce treatment burden, including toxicity, time burden, and cost, while maintaining outcomes, improving quality of life, and supporting equitable global access.

Patients value receiving optimised treatments, but may be less willing to be randomised to receive less treatment in trials.

Multiple trials are now underway evaluating immunotherapy optimisation, including lower dosing, extended intervals, and earlier treatment cessation.

We carried out a study exploring patient perspectives of immunotherapy optimisation trials, and the implications for patient centred trial design and communication.
