Sophie Dunnett: Exploring the Next Generation of Liquid Biopsy Beyond ctDNA

“Another fantastic session in our Liquid Biopsy Online series at Front Line Genomics! 

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of hosting our second webinar, Beyond ctDNA – Evaluating the Next Generation of Liquid Biopsy Biomarkers, sponsored by Thermo Fisher Scientific.

A huge thank you to our brilliant speakers:

  • Catherine Alix-Panabières
  • Dineika Chandrananda

Each talk explored a different aspect of where liquid biopsy is heading beyond ctDNA, and I came away with some really interesting takeaways:

  •  Fragmentomics is opening up entirely new ways of extracting clinically meaningful information from cfDNA, beyond simply looking for mutations.
  •  Circulating tumour cells and immune cell profiling have the potential to provide a much richer picture of tumour biology, particularly when combined with other biomarkers.
  •  The future is likely to be multi-modal. Rather than searching for a single “perfect” biomarker, combining methylation, fragmentomics, CTCs and other signals could deliver more accurate and clinically useful tests.

One theme that really stood out throughout the webinar was that the future of liquid biopsy isn’t about replacing one technology with another – it’s about understanding how different biomarkers can work together to answer different clinical questions.
