“Each year at the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Annual Meeting, early‑career scientists step forward to share discoveries that are shaping the future of cancer research.

Sophia Manjarrez is a Ph.D. student at City of Hope’s Irell and Manella Graduate School of Biological Sciences and a member of the Velazquez-Villareal Lab, led by Enrique I. Velazquez Villarreal, MD, PhD, MPH.

At AACR, she presented her work on the microbiome and its role in early‑onset colorectal cancer. Sophia was also recognized by AACR as an Early‑Career Scholar in Cancer Research, one of two recipients from the Velazquez-Villareal Lab to earn this award.
