International Society of Geriatric Oncology (SIOG) shared a post on LinkedIn:
“New Joint ESMO–SIOG Publication
For five years, the ESMO/SIOG Cancer in the Elderly Working Group has brought together oncologists, geriatricians, surgeons, methodologists, statisticians, and patient representatives to address a persistent gap in cancer research.
Despite representing nearly half of new cancer diagnoses, older adults remain significantly underrepresented in clinical trials. Participation drops to less than 10% in those aged over 75.
This new joint paper outlines pragmatic strategies to:
- Overcome structural and age-related barriers to trial participation
- Integrate geriatric assessment into trial design
- Adopt decentralised and digital approaches
- Include caregiver considerations
- Prioritise endpoints that reflect quality of life, function, and patient goals
This work reinforces SIOG and ESMO’s commitment to ensuring clinical trials are relevant, inclusive, and aligned with the realities of ageing.”
