Siobhan Freeney: Breast Density, Screening Limits, and Patient Awareness in Ireland

Siobhan Freeney, Founder of Lobular Ireland, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Breast Density is a highly visible Radiological finding, yet Breast Cancer Screening Radiologists in Ireland do not report on this and continue to turn a blind eye while Women in Ireland are denied information necessary to make an informed choice about their Breast Health.

Delayed Diagnosis (Masking Effect):
Dense tissue appears white on a mammogram, the same as most tumors, which can hide a cancer (‘masking’).

Non-disclosure prevents patients from seeking supplemental screening (MRI or ultrasound) that could catch these hidden tumors earlier.

Loss of Informed Consent: Patients are considered ‘harmed’ when they are denied information necessary to make an informed choice about their health. Without knowing their density, they cannot assess their true risk or the limitations of their mammogram.

Increased Mortality Risk: While having dense breasts itself doesn’t always increase the risk of dying from cancer, the delay in detection caused by lack of supplemental screening can lead to advanced-stage diagnoses, which are harder to treat.”
