Shweta Bansal: Real World Challenges in BMT of Aplastic Anemia – ISBMT Webinar N15

“Real World Challenges in BMT of Aplastic Anemia — ISBMT Webinar #15

Honoured to be part of the Indian Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (ISBMT) webinar series panel, discussing “Real World Challenges in BMT of Aplastic Anemia.”

The session, moderated by Dr Sidharth Totadri, brought together a multidisciplinary team — including Dr Pravas Mishra, Ms. Saranya Vishwakarma (DATRI Blood Stem Cell Donors Registry ), Mrs. Jyoti Digambar, and others — to discuss how our understanding of aplastic anemia continues to evolve.

Key highlights:

  •  Increasing recognition that nearly 1 in 3 children with aplastic anemia have an underlying genetic or inherited marrow failure syndrome
  •  Importance of genetic work-up before donor selection to avoid donor-derived graft failure
  •  Differences in pediatric vs adult aplastic anemia in etiology, treatment strategy, and outcomes
  •  Real-world barriers — donor availability, conditioning regimens, long-term care, and post-HSCT complications

Why it matters:
Identifying inherited marrow failure early can completely change treatment — from the choice of donor to conditioning intensity and long-term surveillance. These discussions are vital for improving survival and quality of life in children.

Grateful to ISBMT for fostering continuous learning and collaboration across the transplant community.”
