Shrenik Shah: 11,003 Days Without My Natural Voice: Still Here, Still Communicating, Still Pursuing My Purpose

Shrenik Shah, Patient Ambassador and Moderator of Fridays with Shrenik Live webinar at Indian Cancer Society, Delhi, shared on LinkedIn:

“11,003 DAYS WITHOUT MY NATURAL VOICE. WOULD YOU HAVE THE COURAGE TO CHOOSE LIFE?

Imagine being faced with a gut-wrenching decision: to live or to lose your natural voice forever.

This was my reality in Sept. 1997, when, at the age of 44, I learned I had advanced-stage vocal cord cancer. The young surgeon’s words struck like lightning: ‘You must have your vocal cords removed to survive, but you will never speak naturally again.’

In an instant, the foundation of my professional life crumbled. As an entrepreneur, international marketer, and skilled communicator, I saw my voice as my greatest asset. How could I thrive in a world where relationships and negotiations hinge on communication?

The thought of watching my career dissolve was devastating.

Yet, faced with this harrowing choice, I chose life.

That decision marked the beginning of a new journey – not just a battle against cancer, but a resilient fight to redefine myself.

Now, on my 11,003rd day without my natural voice, I reflect on the journey ahead.

When I became someone with a Bionic Voice, I faced unexpected societal challenges. In a world that was far less understanding than today – before smartphones and advanced text-to-speech technology – people often reacted with fear.

Some recoiled at the unfamiliar sound, while others treated me as an outcast.

Surviving cancer was only part of the challenge; the greater battle lay in rebuilding my identity, navigating social rejection, and finding acceptance in a world that didn’t cater to my new reality.

My experience highlights a broader theme: resilience, leadership in adversity, and the importance of inclusion for those who communicate differently.

I urge you to ask yourself:

How would you deal with a lifelong, life-altering challenge like mine?

Reflect on this, whether you are a CEO, an educator, a healthcare professional, a student, or simply someone from any walk of life.

Would you have the fortitude to adapt, or would you allow the challenges to overwhelm you? By sharing these questions, I hope to harness the power of our shared experiences.

My story isn’t merely about loss; it’s about the life I chose and the unwavering belief that circumstances don’t define our potential. 11,003 DAYS WITHOUT MY NATURAL VOICE. I am still here, communicating, pursuing my purpose.

Now, it’s your turn: What would be your first step toward rebuilding your life?

Your insights may illuminate a path for someone else facing their own trials.”
